3 Tips for a Successful Dry Camp

When most people think of RV camping, they think of campgrounds with access to electricity, fresh water, and sewer hookups. However, campgrounds can get pricey and it is very common for RVers to choose to forgo the campgrounds and stay overnight in Walmart parking lots, rest stops, or national parks without hookups. At Unlimited RV, our motorhome rentals are specifically set up for dry camping and we’ll teach you everything you need to know before you hit the road. Read on for some of our favorite dry camping tips.

1. Conserve Water

It may seem like a basic concept, but water is one of the most important things to consider when dry camping. Because you won’t have access to fresh water, you’ll need to be sure to arrive at your destination with a full water tank and self-manage your tanks to ensure you do not run out. Take steps to conserve water, such as shorter and less frequent showers, washing and rinsing dishes in a trickle of water, and using bottled water to brush your teeth. Keep an eye on your tank meters and adjust your water usage accordingly.

2. Conserve Power

Power is a tricky utility to manage while dry camping. At Unlimited RV, our motorhomes have generators that you can use for power, but remember to be considerate with your generator use. Typically, generators are very loud, so only run your unit during reasonable hours to avoid disturbing your neighbors. Also, if you plan on dry camping often, it may be wise to invest in a solar power kit to supplement your power.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

Finally, if you want to give dry camping a try but you’re not feeling very confident, practice with shorter trips first and extend them gradually. A one-night stay in a rest stop is the perfect way to practice conserving water and power, and figuring out what works for you. Many “professional” dry campers can last 10-14 days without refilling water or needing to dump their tanks, so you easily work your way up to 4-5 days.

Dry camping may seem overwhelming and difficult, but many RVers find it worth it for the opportunity to spend the night at a beautiful National Park or the occasional, convenient Walmart lot.
